"Buddy" ... Private Collection, Nicole Howland
--from original acrylic on stretched canvas, 16” x 16” x 1.5”
Buddy was rescued in 2012, from a shelter, when he was nine years old.  His previous owner bought him as a puppy and loved him very much.  Unfortunately, health issues prevented her from begin able to continue to properly care for him.  Once she was placed into assisted living, there was no one in the family able to adopt him.  Buddy was rescued by the Heartworm Project.

He was an amazing dog, who spent the last year of his life being a brave cancer warrior.  He was diagnosed on January 2, 2015 and given only 3 months to live.  Buddy defied the odds and was an inspiration as to how we all should live:  fearlessly and selflessly.  Buddy passed away on December 24, 2015, having left his indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to have met him.

The Artist:  Martha Hooks, a Southerner by birth and choice, has always had dogs in her life.  Her memories of going to field trials with her dad as well as time spent in conformation rings with her Long Coat Chihuahuas helped expand her knowledge of canine anatomy, breed traits and personalities.  She paints full time and commissions are accepted, time permitting.  Of course, her favorite subjects wear fur coats year around.
